DESCRIPTION

Stone Soup Theatre Presents
All about Albee:
Finding the Sun & The Zoo Story
TWO ONE-ACT PLAYS BY AN AMERICAN MASTER

In quiet homage to Albee’s 80th birthday, an unofficial celebration is taking place on stages across the country with revivals of his most celebrated works. Stone Soup Theatre joins the party by presenting two Albee one-acts showcasing his vastly different perspective on American life, death, sex and everything in between.

The Zoo Story, written in 1959 and the first of Albee’s plays that brought him critical notice, brings the iconic characters of Peter and Jerry together on and around that infamous bench in Central Park. Peter, out for a quiet Sunday of reading in his favorite spot, is accosted, accused, amused, educated, held captive and captivated by Jerry, who has just ‘been to the zoo’ -- in more ways than one. The interaction between these two characters from opposite ends of the emotional, socio-economic and moral spectrum is what has fascinated audiences for the last 40+ years. That, plus a great dog story.

Finding the Sun, written on commission for the University of Northern Colorado in 1983, is a 180 degree turn from The Zoo Story. Set on a beach, eight characters ‘looking for the sun’ gradually unfolds a tangled web of relationships that are as bemusing as they are amusing. From senior citizens Henden & Gertrude down through 16 year old Fergus, Albee again explores isolation along with sexual identity, mortality, communication – or lack of it – and the agendas people hide from themselves and others. Written in 21 short scenes, Finding the Sun’s intriguing dialog and wry wit feel almost like a sonata and showcases an older Albee’s spare, graceful language.

Both plays will be directed by Mary Machala.

The two plays presented together give us a partial glimpse of the great body of work Edward Albee has created over the course of his lifetime. Always writing from the edge, Mr. Albee “gives a contrary answer, makes an obscure reference, mystifies, illuminates, divulges, withholds.”* We are never quite sure where we are when we watch Albee but we are mesmerized just same. He somehow seems capture an essential part of the American experience devoid of bells, whistles and rhetoric but still vastly entertaining and sure to create discussion. What more could we ask of an American Master? Happy Birthday Edward!
