When the pace was right (fast) and the actors knew where the laugh lines were (everywhere), “Where’s My Money?” by John Patrick Shanley paid off like a slot machine. When the pace was off, it seemed oddly materialistic and petty. Director (Lawrason Driscoll) combined the right elements for this multilevel production, including, fortunately, some of our area’s best actors. Their blocking was fine. But this script is light fare. Period. Little substance and, hopefully, not meant to have that. Put it this way. If you seek here for a deep dark poem about life’s mysteries, you probably need counseling. The supportive opening-night crowd tried hard to laugh big but some opportunities were missed. I predict (always hedge your bets) that, after opening night, these talented troupers will continue to discover laugh lines in this formulaic script and that audience laughs will only build.

The Set Design (Ian Keith) was a marvel of spirit and functionality. The trippy Original Music (David Schroeder), spiffy Costume Design (Ginger McNew), and tricky Lighting Design (Adam Matthews) enhanced the many mood shifts. Hair & Makeup Artist (Angela Brasier-Agnew) deserves a midsummer plum for her juicy otherworldly interpretations.

The women seemed to have the tightest grasp of what this play was about. Celeste (Michele Hensel) was a beautiful train wreck. Her nicely sedate opening scene with lovely Natalie (Heather Poulson) was a cautionary note for men on just how much emotional content two women can transfer in a short period of time. As she rode the light-rail track to Celestial glory, Natalie took charge of the play with a very smart performance. Her scenes with Henry (Scott Nolette) easily spelled out “je ne sais quoi” between the sexes, but they stumbled over the word “funny”. Henry, played by one of our area’s best naturalistic actors, seemed overqualified for this vapid fast-paced comedy. Marcie Marie (Denise Fleener), on the other hand, knew how to milk this baby. Her organic scene with Sidney (Richard Clairmont) was barnyard boffo and unpasteurized. Tommy (Jim Jackson) nailed his small part.

On balance, I give this production of “Where’s My Money?” 4 amateur stars.
