DESCRIPTION

Three years after his first success with Come Back, Little Sheba (recently revived on Broadway), William Inge wrote a play in homage to the aching hearts of the women he'd grown up with in his mother's Kansas boarding house. It's Labor Day weekend and Madge, the town beauty, is weighing her options. She's lusted after by every fella around, but Alan, scion of a local industrialist is serious about making her his own. Her widowed mother's dream of a picture perfect wedding is threatened when Hal, a handsome but troubled drifter comes unexpectedly into the picture. Explosive and graphic for its time--Inge's skills are at their best as he pulls into sharp focus the desires and motivations of these very human, midwestern characters.

We're calling our Third Season "Our American Table" as we look at different takes on our various and varying relationship with food.

Less than 100 years ago, the top industry in our country was agriculture. Even 40 years ago, farmers and livestock were as much a part of the landscape as automobiles and tv sets. The jet set age of microwave dinners and obesity inducing fast food has overshadowed our agrarian roots. Globalization, multinational agribusiness – even the threat of global warming - makes us feel like we’re living on a completely different planet than the one our parents and grandparents remember. And yet, today we see attempts to hold onto the family farm and even the family supper with the expanding organic food movement and redefined American home-style restaurants.

This season we’re sampling some American voices on food, tradition, and the family farm (THE DINING ROOM, and CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS), and by extension, the dynamics of a small town community and the consequences of globalization (PICNIC and THREE HOTELS).
