DESCRIPTION

Lettice and Lovage, a comedy by Peter Shaffer (Equus, Amadeus) has been a hit all over the English speaking world since it premiered in London in 1987 with Dame Maggie Smith in the title role of Lettice Douffet. Lettice is a tour guide at Fustian House, the least interesting tourist attraction under the aegis of the Preservation Trust. But using her creative imagination and adventurous spirit she embroiders on the true history so as to make the tourists’ experiences more enjoyable. This brings her eventually to the wrathful attention of Lotte Schoen, an officer of the Preservation Trust. However, Lettice’s indomitable spirit, and her refusal to succumb to life’s mediocrities lead to her pursuit of a conversion of Lotte’s grim outlook on life.

The Merc production will introduce Jane Pappidas in the title role in her first appearance on the Merc summer stage. Jane has had a long career in theatre, and has directed and appeared in numerous staged readings at the Merc. Lotte Schoen will be played by Carolanne Steinebach, and the production will be directed by Gregg W. Brevoort, who directed The Drawer Boy for the Merc in 2006.

Peter Shaffer is a British playwright from Liverpool, born in 1926. His first play, The Salt Land, was presented by the BBC. Five Finger Exercise came in 1959, and The Royal Hunt of the Sun in 1964. He has twice won Tony awards: for Equus in 1975, and for Amadeus in 1981. He was knighted in 2001.
