DESCRIPTION

A visually stunning multimedia theater piece, 'work created under compulsion' follows the journeys of artists and workers who have been forced to create in order to survive. Inspired by the Thousand and One Nights heroine Scheherazade, forced to weave stories, the play incorporates video, movement and personal histories that explore the memories that live with us forever. Adding another layer of complexity, the play includes imagistic sequences that are projected directly onto performers bodies and costume pieces. The movement requires intricate choreography that is synchronized to the video projection. The production features metal and wood sculptures that are worn and manipulated by the actors. work created under compulsion questions the ambiguity of identity and the fragility of memory.

The Memory War Theater Project
Kinetic projections and physical theater break open contested sites of memory. Founded in Indonesia in 2002 by Tikka Sears Memory War Theater project is now a Seattle based company devoted to the merging of original text, innovative video projection, and movement. Performers navigate the edges of theater, sculpture, shadow and sound. Choice and the Hunter’s Machine, a contemporary interpretation of the Mahabharata epic in collaboration with the Black Umbrella Theater Company debuted in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2003, A portion of work created under compulsion debuted at the 2007 Northwest New Works Festival at On the Boards. The company focuses on fusing global stories to local audiences.
