DESCRIPTION

In a place much like France in a time much like the 1780s, all the young aristocrats take lessons from Mastrae keeper of the great Secret Book of the Sword. For through their mastery of swordplay, they will learn what it takes to become rulers and keep the poor in their place. Unfortunately, Bernard’s skill is all in his intellect; he is timid and clumsy at battle. To prove a point to those who bully Bernard, Mastrae plucks Gamin, a dirty urchin, from the streets. The lesson is of control and cruelty, completely humiliating to Gamin. Unaware of its true importance, Gamin steals the revered book and flees outside. Once back on the streets she sees that the gypsies are in town, enacting the story of Vesuvia, the goddess of fire. Vesuvia destroys all, but is finally caught and trapped inside the earth, her anger and vengeance growing hotter each day. The story over, the aristocrats chase the gypsies off and, having discovered their book missing, set out to find Gamin. Ruwaa and Raeena, old and wizened beggars, have noticed the danger Gamin is in and decide to take her and her friends under their wings, to the Court of Miracles. This is where the poor hold sway, where beggars are queens. Yet, still there is no one who can read and unlock the secrets of the Book—until Bernard steps out of the shadows offering his services. He has no love for his own kind and wants to help balance the scales of justice, unleashing their own Vesuvia-like fury. As the poor learn the rules of the sword, they prepare a strategy to truly defeat the aristocrats. Gamin returns to the Academy, ostensibly to return the book, and when Mastrae and his students go in for the kill, the poor rush into the hall defeating and disarming all the aristocrats. And the time of the sword comes to an end.
