Key City Public Theatre’s 2008 Summer Performing Arts Series continues in August with a week’s residency by nationally known guest artist Faye Driscoll.

The dance-theatre maker, performing artist and teacher is hailed as “1 of 25 to watch out for in 2008” by Dance Magazine. She is also the daughter of Marrowstone Island resident and KCPT director and performer Lawrason Driscoll.

Driscoll is currently an Artist-in-Residence at HERE Arts Center in New York City and an Artist Advisor/Curator at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange, where she was an Artist-In-Residence 2005-07. Driscoll’s performance works have been presented in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. She is currently assisting David Neumann in his creation of a duet for himself and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Port Townsend audiences will have the treat of attending one of three workshop sneak preview performances of "837 Venice Boulevard," Faye Driscoll Dance Company’s newest work to be premiered in New York City this fall. Performances are Thurs., Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. with a gala reception to follow; Fri., Aug. 15 at 8 p.m.; and Sat., Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. at Key City Playhouse, 419 Washington St., Port Townsend. Tickets are $20, available at the door or in advance by calling KCPT at 360-379-0195.

"837 Venice Boulevard" is a dance-theatre piece about the impossibility of a consistent self. With some irreverence towards social stereotypes, "837 Venice Boulevard" attempts to simultaneously poke fun at and transcend the construct of identity. The performers play "themselves"—a charming but ultimately confusing acting job—as they weave through manipulative relationships, dark childhood memories, funny but sad psychological breakdowns, and intentionally bad dance routines. Performed by Micheal Helland, Celia Rowlson-Hall and Nikki Zilacita.

The New York Times said of this emerging work, "Ms. Driscoll’s rigorous exploration of this physical—-and, it seems, mental—-manipulation feels startlingly original in its peculiar configuration of slapstick and darkness."
