DESCRIPTION

Noted Portland playwright Andrea Stolowitz will conduct two playwriting workshops in Port Townsend February 20 – 21 as part of the expanded 14th Annual Playwrights’ Festival being held at Key City Public Theatre.

The first session, on Saturday Feb. 20, is the Port Townsend Arts Commission’s annual free playwriting workshop, and is open to the public. It runs from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Pope Marine Park Building at Water and Madison Streets.

The second session, on Sunday Feb. 21, costs $75 ($65 for members of KCPT) and is an advanced follow-up to the first workshop. Space is limited for the Sunday event and pre-registration required by calling 360-379-0195 or registering online at keycitypublictheatre.org.

Stolowitz is visiting Port Townsend to attend a reading of her play "Tales of Doomed Love (or is it ever worth it?)" which highlights the Playwrights’ Festival on two Sunday evenings Feb. 21 and 28.

At the free Saturday workshop, Stolowitz will lead students through a series of exercises designed to stimulate creativity and heighten the theatrical impulse. At the Sunday workshop, students will receive feedback on the work they created in Saturday's seminar, and start an advanced exercise.

Individual sessions are also available with Ms. Stolowitz for local writers with ideas for plays or screenplays they want to discuss, or completed scripts for which they want a professional critique.

Andrea Stolowitz is a graduate of the MFA playwriting program at UC San Diego. She has had her plays developed and presented at The Cherry Lane (NYC), The Old Globe (SD), The Long Wharf (CT), New York Stage and Film (NY), and Portland Center Stage (OR).

As a screenwriter, she has written episodes for The Sopranos and The West Wing, and has had two feature length screenplays optioned by Axial Entertainment.

Her play KNOWING CAIRO had its professional world premiere at The Old Globe Theater (San Diego) where it earned a San Diego “Billie” Best New Play Award and was named as an LA Times Critic’s Pick. It has had subsequent national and international productions.

She currently teaches at Willamette University and the University of Portland, and has served
on the theater studies faculty at Duke University and UC-San Diego.

For more information or to register for either workshop online, visit keycitypublictheatre.org.
