Anton Chekhov, past master of short stories wherein mood, setting, and enigmatic relationships are the norm, uses these same elements to engender an epic feeling in the audience. His "Seagull", still the basic primer for anyone unbalanced enough to wannabe a writer or an actor, applies unmercifully to today's instant celebrity culture where pursuing excellence is "boring" next to flaring your ten minutes of fame on reality tv. He gives a perspective on the meat-grinder of worldly success as viewed through the modest stereopticon of country life. The good doctor's treatments for unrequited love are strong medicine indeed.
Key City's production is moody and thought-provoking. Russian moody, that is, where everything seems bigger and where despair, accented by prerecorded balalaika music, is a constant companion. The director (Lawrason Driscoll) shows us his sensitive side by drawing out of well-cast, well-coached actors an opium-dream quality to life. Costumes (Ginger McNew) are bold and evocative. Make-up and hair (Angela Brasier-Agnew) are well-drawn, especially the 2-year change in Nina. An odd set (Brock Walker and Abbie Green) features brown clouds and cubist interior walls modulated by lighting (Albert Mendez). The large round table and sturdy country chairs are inviting. The ever-present swish of water and constant chorus of frogs (Doug Daniels) induce a pastoral ennui.
Nina (Angela Gilbert) is perfect as the ingenue desperately wanting something more out of life. So perfectly ingenuous, in fact, that people were unsure whether she was acting or not during her staged Act I soliloquy. Her infatuation with Trigorin and her return in Act IV are memorable. Trigorin's (Mark Cherniak) description of a writer's dilemma is well worth the admission. The show's funniest one liner is when he says "No." Irina (Michelle Hensel) captures her role as acclaimed actress. Her rebound love scene with Trigorin is touching. Her private struggle as reluctant mother is invariably heartbreaking. Konstantin's (Guy Sands) torment shows us very well what Chekhov himself may have experienced on his way up the ladder of success. Other key performances include: Masha (Amanda Steurer), Yevgeny (Ian Keith), Ilya (Terrence Campbell), Paulina (Judith Glass Collins), and Pyotr (Eligius Wolodkewitsch).
On balance, I give this production of "The Seagull" 5 amateur stars. | -Steve Treacy
