MISSION STATEMENT
We exist for the same reason that there is public education and public health - to support and raise the quality of life in our civilization.

We believe in the theatre of this moment, the present...contemporary struggles, issues, ideas, being. If this practice creates light, consciousness, deeper thought, more fellow feeling, both in our audiences and in ourselves, we believe this to be good for something.

The purpose of this theatre is to be a cultural engine - to promote new art, new thought, a higher degree of artistic excellence. To be centrally interested in, and driven by, our home, Seattle, as well as the world at large.

MORE ABOUT THEATRE
ACT FACTS

Since its founding (as A Contemporary Theatre) in 1965 by Dr. Gregory A. Falls, ACT Theatre has been unwavering in its commitment to present the best in contemporary theatre, from Tom Stoppard to Alan Ayckbourn, and Sam Shepard to Athol Fugard. In addition to creating a home for modern classics and established playwrights, ACT has commissioned dozens of new plays and has presented nearly 30 world premieres. Seattle's second oldest theatre company, ACT has grown steadily from its original base of just 300 subscribers in its inaugural season to its present stature as a nationally recognized theatre that serves up to 10,000 subscribers annually. For 40 years ACT has maintained its reputation for combining artistic boldness with fiscal responsibility.

ACT, originally housed in the historic Queen Anne Hall in the lower Queen Anne neighborhood, is now located at Kreielsheimer Place in the heart of downtown Seattle. Formerly the national headquarters for the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and underwent a $35.4 million renovation by ACT and its partner, Housing Resources Group. The grand opening of Kreielsheimer Place was in September of 1996. ACT's facilities include two main theatres - The Gregory A. Falls Theatre, a 381-seat thrust stage named for ACT's Founding Director, and The Allen Theatre, a 387-seat arena stage (theatre-in-the-round) named in honor of a $2 million gift from The Allen Foundation for the Arts, one of four charitable foundations started by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. In addition, The Bullitt at ACT, named for the late civic leader and broadcasting pioneer Dorothy Stimson Bullitt, is a flexible performance space that houses a variety of special productions, programs and workshops. Buster's, named in honor of long-time board member Dr. Ellsworth C. "Buster" Alvord, Jr., is another multi-purpose space, used for meetings and receptions, and was the home of the long-running hit Late Nite Catechism for over a decade. The building is named in honor of a $3 million gift from the Seattle-based Kreielsheimer Foundation, and earned the 1997 Urban Land Institute's Award for Excellence in Rehabilitation.

ACT's artistic director is Kurt Beattie. Kurt joined ACT in 2001 as associate artistic director and was appointed artistic director in April 2003. His recent director credits for ACT include "Pillowman" in 2006, and both "Intimate Exchanges" and the world premiere of "Becky's New Car" in 2008. As an actor he has appeared locally in leading and major roles at ACT, the Seattle Repertory Theatre, The Empty Space, and Intiman.

ACT's Exective Director is Gian-Carlo (Carlo) Scandiuzzi. Mr. Scandiuzzi joined ACT in 2007 as executive director of new works, and became the Executive Director of the theatre in 2008. In the past, Carlo was the founder of film production companies, the independent film distributor IndieFlix, and a rock promotion company that brought many big groups to Seattle. He also performed as an actor around Seattle, including several plays at The Empty Space Theatre ("Aunt Dan and Lemon", "The Return of Pinocchio" and "Dracula"). As Executive Director, Mr. Scandiuzzi leads the business and external relations side of ACT, as well as continuing to head ACTs innovative Central Heating Lab and new works initiative.
