MORE ABOUT THEATRE
|
The Broadway Center for the Performing Arts located in the heart of downtown Tacoma is the leading performing arts center in the South Puget Sound. The organization was founded in 1979 as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to manage the City of Tacoma owned Pantages Theater. We are stewards of the historic City of Tacoma owned Pantages and Rialto Theaters, and Theatre on the Square, and are responsible for the Jones Building which houses offices of three Resident Arts Organizations (RAOS) and BCPA’s administrative offices. We also manage and maintain the annex which contains a rehearsal hall, costume and scenery shops. All ten Resident Arts Organizations and other performing arts groups utilize the rehearsal hall regularly. We serve our Resident Arts Organizations through professional maintenance of our facilities and by collaboratively marketing and promoting their performances along with our own season.
We accomplish our mission through our performances and those of our nine resident arts organizations. The Broadway Center provides a stage for contemporary and international touring dance ensembles, Broadway musicals, multiple genres of American and international music, and education performances which possess the highest quality of production values and professionalism in young people’s performances. We present genres and education programming that enhances our Resident Arts Organizations’ performances and education programs.
The performances that we present include nationally recognized and local-performing artists both for our Performance Season and well respected Education Program. Last year the Broadway Center, Resident Arts Organizations and other renting groups presented 222 events that served approximately 118,622 people. Patrons are drawn from Greater Pierce, South King, King, Thurston and Kitsap Counties.
Our Education Program correlates to the Washington State’s Essential Academic Learning Requirements and developing future audiences. Our 2005-2006 Education Program served 13,000 persons of which over 90% were youth.
