DESCRIPTION
Nonprofit West Seattle theater group, Twelfth Night Productions, has selected Ira Levin's classic Broadway comedy-thriller, Deathtrap, as their spring offering, in celebration of its 30th anniversary. First staged with a cast that included John Wood and Victor Garber, Deathtrap was nominated for a 1978 Tony Award for Best Play, and holds the record for longest-running comedy-thriller on Broadway. A popular 1982 film adaptation starred Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve and Dyan Cannon.
"As most artistic types are slaves to the Muse," says Todd Downing, director, "I see Deathtrap as an extreme case of writer's block gone horribly, delightfully wrong." The play is famous for its characters and twists, the action onstage often mirroring the premise of the play at the center of the plot. "It"s a really tight piece of writing, with fascinating characters," Downing continues, "and it asks the question, how far would you go for success?" Downing is a longtime associate of Twelfth Night, performed in Bye Bye Birdie and Fiddler on the Roof with the company's summer stock program The Pandemonium Players, and directed The Dining Room for Twelfth Night in the Fall of 2006.
Deathtrap runs for a special two-week engagement at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, formerly historic Cooper School, in West Seattle. Showtimes are: March 28, 29 & April 3, 4, 5 at 7:30 PM, and March 30 & April 6 matinees at 3PM. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students & seniors, and are available through Brown Paper Tickets (www.brownpapertickets.com) and at the Youngstown theater box office on performance days.
