DESCRIPTION

Thom Pain (based on nothing)
by Will Eno
October 5 – November 5, 2006

An Off-Broadway hit when it premiered in 2005, Thom Pain is a theatre event that invites a string of adjectives – funny, existential, honest, engaging, raw –yet defies classification or description. Described in the New York Times as “one of those treasured nights in the theater that can leave you both breathless with exhilaration and in a puddle of tears,” it is an odd, intoxicating affirmation of the value of being alive.

Yeah, I agree with Scot (review below). This show should be seen by you. And you. Yes, and you. I felt like I had been through the wringer when I walked out of the theatre, and I could tell by looking at other faces that I was not the only one who felt that way. I heard a lot of this kinda thing: "I can’t talk about it right now." "I’m exhausted." "I don’t even know what to think."

I have an intense desire to gather a huge group of friends to see the show, and then get wasted afterwards and stay up to late and talk and argue and laugh and love each other.

It was, at times, a highly uncomfortable experience. I wanted it to end; I wanted it to never end; I didn’t want to know; I was desperate to know. It was intense. Such a simple story (plot-wise), but the experience is as complicated as any random 'normal' person’s inner longing. I wished to be the only person in the audience, but I am so glad I wasn’t alone. I would have been frightened.

Todd’s timing was amazing (comic and dramatic), and he cupped us all in the palm of his wounded psyche. Relentlessly - he dragged us, or he coaxed us, or he went on ahead and we sprinted to catch up for fear of being left. Specific, controlled, spontaneous. Todd has had to master this material for him to perform it so seamlessly.

Jerry Manning directed. I spoke with him after, and he was quick to divert the praise to Todd. But there’s no way it could have been achieved without specific, careful, loving direction. The design was bare, and perfect.

Yay, Seattle Rep! Way to push the "subscription-based/big house" envelope. You are my new boyfriend. Please don’t break my heart.

See this show! Even if it pisses you off! (And it certainly did that to a few people last night.)
"Does it scare you to be confronted by the modern mind? It should!" Will Eno has concocted a truly unique one-man show that is hilarious, compelling, disturbing and beautiful, and Todd Jefferson Moore, together with director Jerry Manning, have crafted (if that's even the right word!) an unforgettable experience for y'all. Thom Pain is a modern-day Everyman confronted by the terror of living every day. He's trying very hard to forgive himself, everyone he knows, and the audience, for all the simple everyday atrocities that have made his life feel like such an utter failure. He's really reaching out!--and pulling the rug out from under our assumptions about life and theater over and over again. I can't imagine what kind of courage it takes to perform this show over and over. Every night he has a different scene partner--the audience. How does one prepare for that?
Todd is the guy for the job. Kudos to the Rep for choosing the show, and to everyone involved for grappling with it head on.
