First of all, Key City Public Theatre deserves our respect for maintaining local tradition by mounting full productions of plays (by actual locals). And, before the “curtain rises”, Ian Keith deserves our thanks for “spearheading our off-season theatre and lobby remodel”. It took 50 years, but the much-expanded lobby and extra seats are more-than-welcome audience amenities. It was also a treat to find an overriding theme (“something missing”) emerge from the three one-act plays at The 12th Annual Playwrights’ Festival.
“Apple”, written by DD Wigley and directed by DJ Adams, built slowly to the evening’s most poignant moment. If the building block set was playpen basic, the polemic straight-up (without much amplifying action), the tenuous man-woman relationship deadly familiar (a good thing), we all saw ourselves in the looking-glass climax. The Kid (Keira Matkins) was sweet, Ailee (Heather Poulson) showed good range, Zeke (Ezekial Wakefield) had a neat voice, and if God (John Clise, ex PT Mayor) ruled the world, we’d all be “kinder and gentler”.
“Veteran’s Day”, written by Judith Glass Collins and directed by Denise Fleener, was a powerful script about powerful loss. Without strident politics, it addresses the difficult aftermath of being a “hero” in “a bad war”. The portable bar was an exciting nightshift from the previous play. Gunny (Raven) is appropriately naturalistic throughout as a self-destructive vet. John (Ian Keith) provided good moral support with a few distracting mannerisms. Eve (Patti Quintero) was quietly persistent in her search for the truth.
“Eight Women or, The Bears”, written by Sandy Diamond and directed by Don White, was a clean-cut wrap-up to this “trilogy”. The relationship of Eve (Marcy MacGregor) with her left breast and her 1950’s television idol were key to this madcap comedy. The heroine is no dope as she takes us on a hallucinagenic ferry trip to Seattle for surgery. Nurse and Ursula (both played by Kathi Taylor) have comic chops to chew the scenery at any time but both were willing to share with others. Uncle Milty (Doug Taylor) was satellite-channeled to recreate the inimitable (as good as “black & white”). In spite of himself, Doctor (Michael Cavett) aptly reveals the answer to that age-old question “Is there a doctor in the farce?” The rest of the cast (Ramon Dailey) takes careful aim in a restless show where killer pace is vital.
On balance, I give these productions of “Apple”, “Veteran’s Day”, and “Eight Women or, The Bears” 3 amateur stars.

If you think this festival is amateur work, think again. ... [P]erhaps the strongest slate of plays this festival has seen in all of its 12 years. (read article)

[A] chance to see three different stories told in three vastly different styles...all were imaginatively staged. (read article)
