“As You Like It”, though not Shakespeare’s profoundest play, can be a delightful romp in the park. A very wise choice is to have fun with it. The play’s Director (Denise Winter) did just that. Her casting was excellent. Some shiny new faces along with some old comfortable shoes sold us an Elizabethan experience without gnashing of teeth and scene stealing. Her ensemble direction was integral to the story line, enhancing our understanding of the dialog and rendering all entrances and exits seamless. The patent use of scene changers to form wrestling rings when not operating trellises full of glorious flowers (rustling vines on the flip side) was a true inspiration.
Such scenic spectacle (Albert Mendez) made perfect sense to the audience, giving the shark-net backdrop, two too-real trees, a country cart and other props (Lynne Averill) a tough act to follow. Colorful period costumes (Erin McNamara) combined with women’s high-hair styles (Angela Brasier-Agnew), especially Le Beau’s Queen-of-Hearts get up, contrasted nicely with Beatles riffs and barbecued hotdogs to make for a lovely artery-clogging tea party. Acoustics for this outdoor show were sweet. Actors could be heard, even from the back of this sloping, well-miked, makeshift amphitheater. Although that same downward slope made ground-hugging actions (likely rehearsed on an elevated stage), invisible past the first three rows. Arrive early for ringside seats.
To the extent that standout performances may have magically appeared before our very eyes, the good humor and lively spirits of charming cousins Rosalind (Jennifer Ewing) and Celia (Sophie Pipia) and dashing Orlando (Jesse Olson) gently pulled us into the play’s central love story. My favorite Mae West line: “I found him under a tree like a dropped acorn.” Some wondrous distractions: Jaques’s (Doug Taylor) recounting of the seven ages of man, Mme. Le Beau’s (Rosaletta Curry) grand entrance, Touchstone’s (Jay Page) energy, Audrey’s (Christina Carpentier) earthiness, Charles’s (Jeff Jenson) bravado, and the Musician’s (Jesse Weigel) professionalism. Other strong supporting roles included: Silvius (Sam Cavallaro), Duke Frederick (David Speck), Sir Oliver Martext (Richard Weston), Adam (Jack O’Connor), Duke Frederick (David Wayne Johnson), Dennis (Zach NeSmith), Phoebe (Becky Plant), Oliver (Caleb Dearing), A Lord (Tristan Ward), four kilted “mechanicals” (Liz Dennizon, Emily Huntingford, Jason Noltemeier, & Forrest Walker), two fluffy sheep (Karynna Eichmann & Olivia Noelle), and one venison deer (Tanner Matthew).
On balance, I give this production of “As You Like It” in Chetzemoka Park 5 amateur stars.

Shakespeare at its most delightful... [Jennifer] Ewing is as beautific, self-possessed, smitten and damned funny as you could hope a Rosalind to be. (read article)

This is a fun show, no doubt about it. It\'s as if Shakespeare had Port Townsend and all of its characters in mind when he wrote it. (read article)
