Key City Public Theatre's outdoor production of “The Comedy of Errors” by William Shakespeare is an early evening (6:00pm) romp in Chetzemoka Park. The plot is ridiculously simple. Two pairs of twins, separated at sea, followed by pages and pages of mistaken identities, followed by a last-minute revelation.

The set, costumes, and makeup are a marvel (as in a Marvel Comics graphic novel): cartoonish buildings (Denise Winter) as in the movie “Popeye”; spectacular costumes (Erin McNamara) including non-customary spectacles; and, stunning hair-dos and make-up (Angela Brasier-Agnew). Lighting and special effects (God) include surf noise and a massive murder of crows circling overhead. The Director (Denise Winter) has set the stage for a rip-snorting comedy, which opens organically enough with a dumb show of bizarre looking characters and a cello (Ellie Spitzbart). Microphones are placed strategically for outdoor performance. At this point, it's up to the actors and how well they drive the plot home.

The huge cast is impressive for a town our size. Lines were learned and their characterizations hinted at. To capture and hold our attention throughout, each character needs to be interactive and as bold and brash as the overall stage picture. Laser focus and pacing should then carry us rapidly to the inevitable conclusion. While all this didn't always take place, the opening-evening audience certainly appreciated the times it did. The comic reenactment of the complicated shipwreck is great. The twin Antipholi (Alex Lovett) ably move game elements forward. The boldness of Dromio of Syracuse (Jesse Wiegel) is exemplary, never needing volume adjustment. Dromio of Ephesus (Raven McMillen) and Adriana (Samantha Brasier-Agnew) demonstrate good comic potential. The Abbess (Erin Lamb) is very convincing in a very small role. Nell (Mikaela Euro) along with three "Keystone Kops" (Freeman Luoma, Jason Noltemeier, and Forest Walker) are a kick.

On balance, I give this production of “The Comedy of Errors” 4 amateur stars.
